I discovered Quimper
15 years ago during my first trip through Brittany. Brittany (Bretagne)
became one of my favorite regions in France and I've returned often with
painting groups. It is without a doubt the most American friendly region
of France. This is no doubt due to the bond created during the liberation
of France by the Americans near the end of World War II. There is much to
love about Brittany - from the unsurpassed seafood, the down to earth nature
of the people, the rolling hills and wild ocean. Just as in last years' workshop with Kim in Burgundy we will fly into Paris. There are two ways to get to Quimper from Charles De Gaulle airport: Take the train from the airport train station making a change in Rennes for the train to Quimper; take a cab or bus into Paris to the Gare Montparnasse and from there take one of a number of direct trains to Quimper. That's what I'm doing. |

Kim was born in 1957 in Omaha, Nebraska and raised in a rural community near Colorado Springs. Kim's publications and articles include: Southwest Art Magazine "Charmed by the Commonplace"; American Artist Magazine "A Moment of Trtuth"; Artists Magazine "Keeping it Simple"; Art Talk - Focus; and the Review "An Instinctive Way to Paint". Kim receives his inspiration traveling throughout the world, capturing images of everyday life. His years of experience teaching anatomy at the Art Students League of Denver is apparent in the way he captures the figure so beautifully in so many of his paintings. Those of you who know me you will also know that this following description is not in my own words! Quimper, capital of the Cornouaille area, has a fascinating architectural and cultural heritage to discover. Stroll around the centre of town and take in the architecture of the many timber-framed houses that bear witness to medieval skills. At the heart of the walled town is the majestic cathedral, standing proudly in Place de Saint-Corentin, and the palais des évêques or, bishops palace, that now houses the regional museum of Brittany. To the south youll
find the Locmaria quarter, where the first earthenware factory was built
in 1690, the 11th century church and 17th century priory. Dont
miss the Place Terre-au-Duc, the former Ursuline convent
(now a multi-media library), the Cornouaille theatre and the Quartier
contemporary arts centre. This year, Quimper is celebrating 1920s and
30s Art Deco style in architecture, furniture, posters, pottery etc.
We will be lodging in Quimper where there is much to do and see and paint. But we will take day trips to some of my favorite places in all of France. Concarneau is where I spent my summer painting alone 16 years ago. This is the third largest fishing port village in France and a great place to play in the ocean.. We will also spend a day in Pont Aven where Gauguin held court in the late 19th century and created an informal school of art around fauvism. There is a great museum in town celebrating it's 25th year and some other historic sites I will share with you. The Yellow Christ, painted by Gauguin, is still in the tiny church on top of the hill overlooking Pont Aven. Pont Aven is a town chocked full of really cool art galleries! Concarneau and Pont Aven are only 15 kilometers from Quimper! Check back often as I will be adding new information from time to time.. |

| We will be lodging at two hotels: the Hotel Gradlon - the number one rated hotel in all of Quimper. Read what people say about the hotel on Trip Advisor and the Best Western Hotel Kregenn. They're quite close to each other - 5 minutes walking distance. The Kregenn is the number 4 rated hotel in Quimper! | |
