Art Stuff Newsletter

the art newsletter about YOU....

OK, let's dive right into the web sites. If you haven't shared your web site with the rest of us send it to me and I guarantee it will be in the next newsletter. This is not a juried submission. My last appeal for sites brought a few more than I can include this month but Brigitte Curt and Judy Thorley are the top of the list for the next newsletter.

Miscellaneous

Here are the results of a survey that I'm not sure I wanted to know about: A Survey Shows Pain of Recession for Artists.

If you've never been to the Burgundy region of France then you ought to come with me and Kim English in June. It has to be one of the most gorgeous parts of France. Big rolling hills, waterways, great cities and villages. Basically everything the painter could want. And a heck of a lot to do for the non-painter. Take advantage of my two for one deal on double occupancy while I'm still feeling generous. You'll be glad you did. Here's a great slide show of a recent Burgundy workshop put together by Jennifer of Nashville, TN.

This idea is so cool: There is a new site called Pay Me With A Chicken that is just fascinating and in it's early stages of development. Basically the idea is to barter for the things you want, rather than just buy and sell. They have a category for artists. When you check out the site and click on the art link on the left and then click on the woman's barter ad: Paintings for Trade, you'll see what's up with this. It's still in development but could be so interesting for us. I registered (which is free) and if you do just click on 'contact' and let them know that you heard about it here!

The San Miguel de Allende workshop with Timothy Horn has two spaces left - so what are you waiting for?

Scams aimed at artists are making the rounds again. I got an email from someone offering to buy a painting of mine- that's how they lure you in. Most of the scams are of the advance fee fraud or 419 type scam. They will attempt what seems like a legitimate transaction, but then require you to send them money at some point.

The good thing is that the scammers do the same thing over and over, so doing a bit of research online usually will give you the information you need to recognize a scam and not fall for it. In any case, if they send you a check or money order exceeding the agreed upon amount, DROP IT. Do not cash the check/money order and do not respond to any of their emails. Some banks charge you if you attempt to cash a bad check/money order, so do not attempt to cash it if it is suspect. More info here.

I'm in the planning stages of a workshop in Istanbul for next May taught by Gregg Kreutz. Let me know if this is something that appeals to you and I'll put you on a special mailing list.

Want to see Mona Lisa created out of 3,604 cups of coffee? Well, here it is thanks to Nancy M.

When was the last time any of us not named Andy Warhol sold a painting for $43.7 million? It's been a while for me. Well, Andy sold one at Sotheby's for that price earlier in the month. Which painting? Our favorite no doubt: '200 One Dollar Bills'.

artist quotes

"You could say that I have no inspiration, that I only need to paint." Francis Bacon

"My heart beats more for a raw, average vulgar art, which doesn't live between sleepy fairy-tale moods and poetry but rather concedes a direct entrance to the fearful, commonplace, splendid and the average grotesque banality in life." Max Beckmann

"Everyone has talent at 25. The difficulty is to have it at 50." Edgar Degas

"Painting is easy for those that do not know how, but very difficult for those that do!" Edgar Degas

"The longer you look at an object, the more abstract it becomes, and, ironically, the more real". Lucian Freud
